September is National Preparedness Month

County highlights importance of being prepared for emergencies

Poughkeepsie… September is National Preparedness Month and Dutchess County Executive Marc Molinaro joins the Dutchess County Department of Emergency Response to urge all residents to take the time to be prepared for disasters and emergencies of any kind.

“As communities across the nation and world continue to feel the effects of natural disasters, the COVID-19 pandemic, and other emergencies, it is more important than ever for residents to be prepared,” said County Executive Marc Molinaro. “By having a plan, keeping an emergency kit stocked, and following the instructions of local officials in emergencies, we all can do our part to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe and healthy in any kind of emergency.”

The theme of the 2020 National Preparedness Month, presented by the public service campaign Ready.gov, is “Disasters Don’t Wait. Make Your Plan Today.” and offers tips on how to be better prepared during a pandemic or other emergency.
Perhaps more than ever, this year has highlighted the importance of being prepared. From Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to toilet paper and hand sanitizer, the COVID-19 pandemic caught many citizens unprepared and supplies flew off store shelves as many households stocked up on last-minute supplies for a prolonged stay at home.

When Tropical Storm Isaias impacted the region, many found themselves without power for several days, highlighting the need to be prepared for at least 72 hours as blocked roadways are cleared and power is restored.

“Being prepared for and anticipating unexpected challenges is essential in an emergency situation,” said Emergency Response Commissioner Dana Smith. “National Preparedness Month is a great opportunity for families and individuals to learn more about how they can become active partners in disaster readiness.”

More information on emergency plans and preparedness can be found on the County’s website, dutchessny.gov. For more on National Preparedness Month, visit www.ready.gov.
